Class Information

Is this class really FREE?    Yes!  Examining the class content, printing the workbook, taking the practice exam is all free.  We hope you will decide to purchase from us and if you decide to obtain your Proof of Completion from us, you will pay for the class, complete the Applicant's Affidavit and we will email the required Proof of Completion. (see below)

I have already taken the state exam.  I received a letter from the Secretary of State's office. Is this the class I need?   Yes.  If your commission has not expired you may take the 3 hr. renewing notary class.

My Commission has just expired...which class do I need?  You will need to take the 6 hour class again.  The state consideres this a  new commission, not a renewing commission.

How long does it take to go through the workbook online?   For renewing notaries it should take about 3 hours.  If you are a new notary it will take at least 6 hours.

Is the 3 hour and 6 hour class the same class?  Yes, The same material must be covered for the 3 and 6 hour classes so it is the same class.  It should take a renewing notary no more that 3 hours to review and learn of new laws.  A new notary will take much longer.

May I print out the workbook?   Yes.  The workbook is a PDF

What happens after I click the "pay now" button?   After purchasing the class through PayPal you will be taken to the Applicant's Affidavit page. 

Can I pay with a credit card?  yes

Applicant"s Affidavit

What is the Applicant"s Affidavit?  This is the document that you will complete and return (click "send) to the instructor.  You will be certifying that you have spent 3 or 6 hours on the class.  You will enter your ID information and this will be shown on your Proof of Completion that will be emailed back to you.

What is the "school info" ?    If you registered through a school you must give the name of the school, otherwise leave it blank.

Why do you need this information?  Your Proof of Completion will be based on the information you give on the Applicant's Affidavit. Be sure your name, ID information and PayPal receipt number are correct.

What name do I use on the Applicant's Affidavit?  You must use your legal name as it appears on your photo ID.  When you take the state exam you will show the proctor your ID and it must match the Proof of Completion.   Don't us nicknames!

Proof of Completion

How long before I receive my Proof of Completion?  Your Proof of Completion will be emailed to you within 72 hours.  If you need it sooner please email the instructor.

What do I do with the Proof of Completion?  Take it with you when you take the state exam.  If you do not have it you may still take the exam but the state will return you application and ask that you submit the Proof of Completion.  This will delay your commissioning process.

Name/Address Issues

My drivers license has a different name than I now use...what name do you want?  When you fill out the Applicant's Affidavit we will need you name as it appears on your identification.  The state consideres this you legal name.

State Exam

Where can I go to take the State Exam? You must contact CPS for the State Exam. The Schedule and location can be found at: http://www.cps.ca.gov/TakeATest/Notary/schedule.asp or call 916-263-3520. It is best to make an appointment ASAP! The State is currently taking 9 - 12 weeks to process new and renewing notary applications.

Can I take the state exam online?   No, not at this time. The state exam is administered by a state contractor, CPS.  It is offered a different locations throughout California.  Follow the links on the next page for contact information to take the exam.  It is best to make an appointment ASAP. The State Exam is offered in several counties throughout California on a regular basis. CPS is contracted by the state to provide notary testing.

I am renewing my commission.  When can I take the exam?   You may take the exam to renew your commission  6 months prior to your expiration date.  However, you will not receive your new commission until 30 days prior to your commission expiration date.

Do I have to complete the class before I schedule the exam?   No,  it is best to schedule the exam ASAP  Taking the education class prior the taking the exam is recommended...remember, you must submit the Proof of Completion of the class before a commission will be issued by the state.

What do I need to take to the exam site? Current photo ID, completed application form, 2 x 2 color passport photo, Proof of Completion certificate of the class (3 or 6 hours).

How much does it cost to take the exam?    $40.00, check or money order payable to the Secretary of State (no cash)

What is a passing grade?   70% is required to pass the exam...you will receive results within 15 days...retake fee is $20.
